Children are beautiful young beings full of wonder and curiosity. They ask questions we don't always have an answer for, and sometimes the answer we do know can be difficult to simplify.
Everybody is different. Different eyes, hair, skin colour, shape of face, height, longer arms, shorter bodies....no two people are exactly the same on the outside or the inside. The problem is we can't see what makes us different on the inside.
I recently tried to explain to my daughter why a classmate with autism was different then most of the people in her class. She thought he was a baby because he didn't use the bathroom like everyone else in class, and he couldn't talk like most people. Young children don't quite understand why some people are different then others on the inside. They can see with their eyes that people look different on the outside, but what's on the inside is something that is invisible.
I explained to my daughter that this student was different in their brain then she was. Some people can read better then others, write better, skip rope better, run faster, jump higher, or anything else better or slower then someone else can. It doesn't make them a better person if they can skip rope or read better then another person.....they just haven't learned it the same way she did. I told her that this student might learn to do the same things she knows, but not at the same time she did.
I compared her to her little sister and said that she learned to walk when she was almost 11 months old, but her sister learned at 13 months. She learned sign language at 6 months, but her sister at 9 months. My youngest wants to try everything and enjoys her gymnastics class, my eldest enjoys solitary things. My daughter is also an awesome reader and reading at a whole grade higher then most of her classmates, it doesn't make her better then them, just different....and that's good.
The world would be boring if everyone was the same. Everyone would look the same, sound the same, read the same, same, same, same. How lonely it would be to not be original, how far behind would human evolution be if we were all the same. No new beautiful music, art, science, religion......
If we were all the same....what would we look like on the outside? Or the inside of our minds.....where all the creativity happens. The dreams, the goals, the hurt, and the happiness all come from inside. No two people are the same....not even twins. We all feel things different.
Embrace difference in others and accept them because not only can we not change it because it would change a person, but because each difference makes us unique as our own being. Celebrate difference because it's what makes us human to be able to accept it and enjoy it.
